What Is a Compliance Gap?

Definition

A compliance gap is a shortfall between an organization's current systems or processes and what's required by relevant regulations or industry standards.

Importance

Compliance gaps often go unnoticed until an audit, a security incident, or a new regulation brings them into sharp focus, by which point the cost of addressing them, in fines, remediation, or reputational damage, is far higher than it would have been to fix proactively. Identifying gaps before they're forced into the open gives an organization the chance to close them on its own terms.

Application

We identify compliance gaps as part of technical debt and security assessments, reviewing systems and processes against the specific regulations and standards relevant to a client's industry, such as PCI-DSS, HIPAA, or SOC 2. The output is a clear, prioritized list of gaps along with a remediation plan, so clients can address the highest risk issues first rather than treating compliance as an undifferentiated checklist. This is often a foundational step ahead of modernization work, since compliance requirements frequently shape what a modernized system needs to look like.
