What Is a Database?

Definition

A database is a structured collection of data that can be accessed, managed, and updated electronically, forming the storage layer that most applications rely on to hold and retrieve information.

Importance

The choice and design of a database has an outsized effect on an application's performance, reliability, and ability to scale, decisions that are expensive to reverse once an application is built around them. A poorly designed database schema or an outdated database technology can quietly limit an application's growth long before anyone traces the problem back to its source.

Application

We design and manage databases as a core part of both new development and modernization work, choosing the right database technology, relational or otherwise, for a client's specific data and performance requirements. This includes schema design, migration from legacy database platforms, and ongoing performance tuning, since a database that was well designed for an application's original scale can still become a bottleneck as usage grows.
