Definition
Application Modernization Consulting is the assessment of a legacy application's dependencies, technical debt, and business risk, used to define the right modernization path and build a phased roadmap for executing it.
Importance
Choosing the wrong modernization approach, rebuilding something that only needed refactoring, or refactoring something that genuinely needs replacing, wastes budget and can leave an organization with a system that still doesn't meet its needs. Getting this decision right up front, before committing engineering resource, is what separates a modernization program that delivers real business value from one that drags on for years without a clear destination. Consulting at this stage is where the biggest cost and risk decisions of the whole program get made.
Application
We assess each application against its strategic value, technical health, and the organization's delivery capacity, then recommend the appropriate path from the standard set of modernization strategies (rehosting, replatforming, refactoring, rearchitecting, or a full rebuild) rather than defaulting to one approach across an entire portfolio. Most real-world modernization programs end up using a mix of these strategies across different applications, since a mission-critical system and a stable, low-priority one rarely warrant the same treatment. The output is a prioritized, phased roadmap sequencing which systems get modernized first, based on business impact, cost, and risk.
