Definition
A Modernization Roadmap is a phased plan that sequences which systems get modernized first, based on business priority, technical risk, and available budget, rather than treating an entire technology estate as one undifferentiated project.
Importance
Attempting to modernize everything at once is rarely realiztic, given budget and team capacity constraints, and treating every system as equally urgent means the genuinely critical risks don't get addressed any faster than the low priority ones. A clear roadmap forces the harder conversation about sequencing up front, so the systems carrying the most business risk get attention first rather than whichever project happens to be easiest to start.
Application
We build modernization roadmaps by scoring each system in a client's estate against business criticality, technical risk, and modernization effort, then sequencing the resulting priority list into phases that fit a client's actual budget and team capacity. This typically surfaces a smaller number of genuinely urgent systems, often those approaching end of support or carrying the most concentrated technical debt, that get prioritized ahead of lower risk systems, even when those lower risk systems might otherwise have been the more straightforward starting point.
