What Is Identity and Access Management (IAM)?

Definition

Identity and Access Management covers the systems and processes that control who can access what within an organization's technology environment, from individual user accounts through to system-level permissions.

Importance

Weak access controls are behind a large share of security incidents: former employees retaining access after leaving, overly broad permissions granted for convenience and never revoked, shared credentials with no accountability for who actually used them. Strong IAM closes these gaps, and it's also foundational to most compliance frameworks, which require organizations to demonstrate exactly who can access sensitive systems and data, and why.

Application

We implement IAM as part of both new infrastructure builds and ongoing cloud administration, covering user provisioning and deprovisioning, role-based access controls, and multi-factor authentication across a client's systems. This is typically one of the more overlooked areas in an infrastructure audit, permissions accumulate quietly over years as staff change roles or leave, so a periodic access review is often one of the highest-value, lowest-effort improvements we recommend.
