Definition
J2EE, now known as Jakarta EE, is the enterprise Java platform used to build large scale business applications; the J2EE name itself predates a later rebrand, though many organizations still run applications built on genuinely old versions of the platform.
Importance
Java itself remains deeply embedded in enterprise software, still powering the majority of large organizations' backend systems, but many of those systems run on Java EE 8 or older, an aging version that requires a namespace migration to move onto currently supported, modernized runtimes. The platform's lineage is very much alive and actively developed; the risk sits specifically with organizations still running old, unmigrated versions rather than with Java as a technology.
Application
We assess which specific Java EE version a client's applications are running, since that determines whether the priority is a namespace migration onto a modern, actively supported runtime, or a more substantial modernization of applications built on genuinely outdated foundations. Where the underlying application is well structured, moving onto a modern, lightweight runtime is often a faster path than a full rebuild, preserving the investment already made in the application's business logic while resolving the version specific risk.
