What Is PowerBuilder?

Definition

PowerBuilder is an application development tool, still actively developed by Appeon, historically popular for building business applications; many enterprise deployments run genuinely old versions that no longer receive vendor support.

Importance

PowerBuilder is not an abandoned product, Appeon continues to release new versions on a regular schedule, but a meaningful share of production PowerBuilder applications still run on versions that predate Appeon taking over development, which receive no fixes or security patches at all. Much of the risk in these older applications sits in the UI layer itself, since PowerBuilder's DataWindows often embed business rules and validation logic directly inside event handlers rather than in a separate, cleanly documented layer.

Application

We assess which PowerBuilder version a client is running first, since that determines whether an upgrade within the current, actively supported product line is viable, or whether the application is old enough that a fuller migration is the safer path. Because PowerBuilder's UI layer frequently contains embedded business logic rather than a clean separation of concerns, we invest early in extracting and documenting that logic accurately, since misunderstanding what the UI actually does is the most common way a PowerBuilder modernization project goes wrong.
