Definition
VB6 is a legacy Microsoft development tool for building Windows desktop applications, long unsupported by Microsoft, that still runs a meaningful number of enterprise applications today.
Importance
VB6's risk profile has sharpened in recent years for reasons that go beyond Microsoft ending official support long ago: 64 bit Windows has been dropping support for the 32 bit COM components many VB6 applications depend on, hardware refreshes increasingly can't run the old runtime at all, and third party control installers are failing more often as their vendors move on. That combination means VB6 applications that have run untouched for years are increasingly likely to break on their own, on a timeline the organization doesn't control.
Application
We assess VB6 applications for the specific failure risks that matter most today, COM component compatibility, hardware and OS support, and third party dependency health, rather than treating age alone as the trigger for action. Because VB6's architecture is incompatible with modern .NET, migration means a full rewrite to C#, and because a significant share of VB6 business logic typically lives inside UI event handlers rather than a separate logic layer, we invest early in extracting and documenting that logic accurately before rebuilding, since misunderstanding what the old UI actually does is the most common way this kind of migration goes wrong.
