What Is Shift-Left Security Testing?

Definition

Shift-Left Security Testing means moving security testing earlier in the software development process, so vulnerabilities are identified and fixed before release rather than discovered afterwards.

Importance

The cost and disruption of fixing a security issue grows substantially the later it's caught: a vulnerability found during development is a code change, while the same vulnerability found after release can mean an emergency patch, a public disclosure, or worse, an active exploit. Shifting testing earlier catches the same class of issues while they're still cheap and low risk to fix.

Application

We build automated security testing directly into the development pipeline, running static code analysis and dependency scanning on every commit rather than only during a pre-release review. This means developers see security feedback within minutes of writing code, while the context is still fresh in their mind, rather than weeks later during a separate security review process that requires re-establishing that context from scratch before a fix can even begin.
