What Is the Front End?

Definition

The front end is the part of a software system that users see and interact with directly: the interface, visual design, and client-side functionality that sits on top of the back end logic.

Importance

The front end is where users form their entire impression of an application's quality, regardless of how well-engineered the back end is underneath it. A confusing or slow interface will drive users away from an otherwise well-built system, which is why front-end design and performance deserve the same level of engineering rigor as the back end, rather than being treated as a final layer of polish.

Application

We build front ends focused on usability, performance, and accessibility, working from the specific needs of the people who'll actually use the application rather than generic design trends. This includes optimizing for fast load times and responsive behavior across devices, since a front end that looks good in a demo but performs poorly for real users under real conditions undermines the value of the work sitting underneath it.
