Definition
The UI, or User Interface, is the visual elements and controls a person interacts with directly when using a piece of software: buttons, menus, forms, and layouts.
Importance
The UI is the only part of a system most users ever see, which means it carries an outsized share of how they judge a product's overall quality, regardless of how solid the underlying logic is. A confusing or dated UI can undermine trust in an otherwise well built system, while a clear one can make even a modest feature set feel more capable than it is.
Application
We design UIs based on how the people actually using an application work, not on generic templates, testing layouts and interactions with real users rather than assuming what will be intuitive. This applies equally to new builds and to UI modernization on legacy systems, where updating the interface often delivers a disproportionate improvement in how a system is perceived, even when the underlying logic hasn't changed at all.
